Shmatte Factory
Shmatte Factory is a clothing brand focused on hand painted and printed items using linocut techniques on upcycled and thrifted garments with a focus on using natural fibers. Think painted leather jackets covered in oysters and swans, chore jackets painted with western themes, denim covered in moth prints, pants painted with sticks of butter… “Shmatte” means “rag” in yiddish and the term “shmatte factory” was shorthand for the historic garment factories of the early 1900s that employed so many Jewish immigrants in New York City and beyond. Inspired by their Jewish upbringing in NYC, many of the designs and illustrations on these garments are inspired by this culture in cheeky little ways. Queer-owned and handmade in Kingston NY.
