Maria Elena Ferrer-Harrington
I’m a sculptor and clay animator whose wooden puzzles are deceptive: They look easy to put together when in fact they are quite difficult. I started designing them in 1992 as a “meditative respite” from my work managing a Venezuelan animation studio, where I was also the art and special-effects director. I was working late into the night and then early the next morning for days on end, and needed something creative that prevented me to come apart. A colleague showed me a wooden puzzle someone brought him from Italy and I immediately loved the work. We started crafting similar puzzle sculptures together, with me eventually continuing the work alone, designing more sophisticated and thought provoking figures. My puzzles have been shown in Caracas; Valencia, Spain; and here in Kingston, including at the Arts Society of Kingston, the juried art show “Fall for Art” and last two years’ “Made in Kingston.”

Michael Lalicki
What inspires me is material (wood, paper, glass, plastic, etc.) and how they can be manipulated (carved, forged, bent, cut, pierced) to create something that did not exist or a word, thought, idea. I might want to make a ship that did not exist before. So I define my problem…That is I make decisions as to what elements I need to design this ship.
